Myofascial Release
Definition
Myofascial Release is a highly specialized stretching
technique used to treat patients with a variety
of soft tissue problems. Myofascial Release is a therapeutic treatment
utilizing a gentle form of stretching, producing a profound healing
effect upon the body tissues, eliminating pain and restoring motion.
Malfunction of the fascial system due to trauma, posture, or
inflammation can create a binding down of the fascia, resulting in
abnormal pressure on nerves, muscles, bones, or organs. This can create
pain or malfunction throughout the body, sometimes with bizarre side
effects and seemingly unrelated symptoms. Myofascial Release treats
these symptoms by releasing the uneven tightness in injured fascia.
Myofascial therapy represents a philosophy of care in
which the therapist facilitates the patient's own inherent ability to
correct soft tissue dysfunction. Myofascial models were described in the
Osteopathic literature of the 1950's. Many other contemporary treatment
approaches such as connective tissue massage, Rolfing, Strain and
Counterstrain, and soft tissue mobilization use the same Myofascial
models.
